Cranio-Sacral Balancing is a system of re-establishing symmetry of soft tissue tension & joint mobility. Cranio-Sacral work is a gentle form of holistic therapy developed from cranial osteopathy & oriental approach to bodywork. It uses light touch to evaluate & affect the cranio-sacral system, i.e. the cranium (skull), the spinal column & the membranes & cerebrospinal fluid that surround & protect the brain & spinal cord, which then helps create a sense of balance from the top of the head to the base of the spine.
The Cranio-Sacral practitioner's attention is on the cranio-sacral rhythm, the very subtle slow rhythmic ebb & flow of cerebro- spinal fluid, & light touch is applied on the cranial bones, the sacrum & at the interconnected membranes. This technique is extremely gentle, non-intrusive, yet very specific. After a session, you will feel deeply relaxed & balanced. Cranio-sacral balancing is often used at the end of a general massage or other treatment session.
Treatment usually takes place on a massage table with the client wearing light clothing. The practitioner will gently palpate areas of the body (usually the sacrum at the base of the spine & the head), using a very light touch to feel the cranial rhythmic impulse (CRI) of the cerebrospinal fluid. The treatment aim is to restore balance by allowing the removal of restrictions to the movement of the CRI to facilitate the body’s own self-healing. A Cranio-Sacral session will normally last between 30 & 60 minutes & is suitable for everyone, including babies, children & the elderly.
Cranio-sacral work reduces post treatment soreness, & generally reduces the likelihood of return of the pain or tightness. Cranio-sacral balancing is particularly useful with headaches which are neck or jaw (TMJ) related, & for neck or lower back pain. Cranio-Sacral Therapy may help many conditions as it can affect all aspects of the body by enhancing general health, reducing stress & improving brain & spinal cord function. It is commonly used to treat conditions such as chronic pain, scoliosis, coordination problems, post-operative care, sports injuries, depression, central nervous system disorders, digestive ailments, brain injury, birth trauma, hyperactivity & hormonal imbalances. If you have a problem for which your doctor can find no cause, Craniosacral Therapy, approaching from a different direction, may be able to help you.
